This year Copper Canyon will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week starting February 27. This is a special week dedicated to honoring our teachers and staff for all they do for our children. The goal is to do something special each day of the week. We have also added some new things this year. The most important thing to remember is do things from the heart. Each year the PTA presents a Science Week for all of the students to enjoy. This year’s Science Week will be held the week of May 7-11. Although that seems quite a long time from now, we are already preparing for a fantastic week. With Science Week, our goal is to expose our students to the variety of sciences and to engage them in real life learning. After all, the world is only getting smaller and more competitive in the sciences. Throughout Science Week we will be welcoming presenters to speak to the classrooms about the many aspects of science and how science is used in our lives and workplaces. Topics in the past have ranged from biology to computer science, robotics to physics. We reach out to the broader community for a variety of presenters, but one of our best resources is right here—our Copper Canyon community. If you have a background in one of the sciences, either in an interest, degree, or employment, and would like to participate as a presenter in Science Week, please contact Heather Mitra at hjmitra@gmail.com. Please join us on Friday, March 2nd at 6:30 p.m. on the Copper Canyon field for a movie under the stars. Due to studio license agreements, we cannot publish the movie title on the internet; however, the movie is a family film inspired by the amazing true story of Winter, a young dolphin who loses her tail, and Sawyer, an 11-year old boy who befriends her. Sawyer meets the rescued dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine rehabilitation center where she lives. Sawyer rallies friends and family alike to save Winter by convincing a pioneering doctor to create a unique prosthetic appendage to restore the dolphin’s ability to swim. This movie stars Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick, Jr. and Ashley Judd and is rated PG.

Admission is $5/family (PTA members); $10/family (non-members) in advance – OR – $10/family (PTA members); $15/family (non-members) at the gate. Look for order forms in Monday Mail on 2/21 and 2/27. Order forms are also available in the front lobby.

Popcorn is included with admission. Soda, water, and candy will be available for purchase.

The week of February 8th thru the 12th is $ sub week at Jersey Mikes for Copper Canyon Elementary School. We will receive $1. cards for a sub sandwich to be used that week distributed in Monday’s mail. They need to be used that week! So if the families don’t want them turn them back in ASAP or give them to someone else! We want all the cards to come in. You can get more cards in the School office. One per family member. All the $1. cards that come back that week will be donated to the school. We will also be passing them out at pickup on Tuesday and Wednesday. Jersey Mikes is also passing them out for us to local businesses. Cool and awesome right!

The Copper Canyon PTA has collected all the wonderful prizes that were won thanks to YOU voting for Copper Canyon on the Doozy of a Deal Facebook page. The following prizes were won by our school:

Has a Copper Canyon teacher or staff member made a difference in your child’s life? The United Parent Council (UPC) honors PVUSD teachers and staff members annually through its Teacher-Staff Appreciation Awards. Parents and students who wish to nominate a teacher or staff member can complete the nomination form, including a short letter as to why the nominee is deserving of the award.

Nominations forms are due by March 30, 2012.
