Copper Canyon PTA has a variety of programs for the students and school. These programs range from creative academic programs to fun family events to behind-the-scenes administration. Together they make Copper Canyon a special place for our children! Below are the programs and events Copper Canyon PTA sponsors throughout the year.
Artist In Residence – 2nd and 5th grade: This once a year program is designed for students to experience different forms of music, dance and/or art. The 2nd grade program produces art pieces the students can either take home or make permanent displays at school. The 5th grade program culminates in a performance for fellow students and families.
Back to School Ice Cream Social: The PTA provides ice cream for all students at the Back to School Ice Cream Social. There’s no better way to cap off an exciting time of seeing old friends and meeting a new teacher than enjoying a cool treat.
Beautification: PTA helps keep Copper Canyon beautiful by maintaining flower planters outside of the school. PTA has also designed and tiled mosaics on planters; these designs were created by Copper Canyon students and reflect the beauty of Arizona.
Bingo Night: Families come together for a night of Bingo fun, organized by PTA volunteers. Students love that some of their favorite teachers and staff are the Bingo callers and snack vendors! Winners receive prizes donated by local businesses.
Book Fair: The PTA holds a Book Fair that provides an opportunity for students and families to purchase books with fantastic savings. One of the highlights of the Book Fair is Donuts with Dad, a morning in which students can bring their fathers, grandfathers, uncles or other special someone to the Book Fair for breakfast and browsing.
Box Tops: The PTA collects Box Tops for Education to raise funds for PTA programs. To encourage participation, often classrooms engage in friendly competition to determine who can collect the most Box Tops.
Bulletin Boards: Creative PTA volunteers design and maintain PTA bulletin boards located in the main Copper Canyon lobby and hallway. The lobby bulletin board highlights upcoming PTA programs, while the bulletin board in the hallway showcases PTA’s latest event. The students love to see pictures of themselves!
Copy Cats: Copy Cats ensure that teachers do not have to use their valuable planning time making copies for their classrooms, as Copy Cat volunteers come at scheduled times to make those copies. This also prevents backups at the school copier.
Cultural Arts Field Trips: This PTA program provides funding to subsidize every grade level to be able to attend a Cultural Arts event. By the time a student leaves Copper Canyon, they will have had a wide variety of cultural experiences, including different types of theatre, museums and musical performances.
eScrips: The PTA organizes and publicizes to families the eScrip program, which gives a percentage of sales at participating retailers, including Safeway, to the PTA.
Fall Festival: This event consists of games, entertainment, fun, food, and prizes. The Fall Festival attracts students of all ages and their families for a day of fun and friendship. Students can play games, listen to music, and enjoy time with friends and family. Past Fall Festivals have had live bands, Copper Canyon Kids Chorus, dunk tanks, game trucks, crafts, food vendors, and community leaders such as firemen and policemen—complete with their fire engine and police cars.
Family Fun Nights: Family Fun Nights allow families to gather at family friendly local businesses for dinner or other activities. These are excellent ways for students to see school friends and families to get to know each other outside of the school setting.
Field Day: Field Day is an annual day of outdoor sports and games. The PTA works in cooperation with Copper Canyon’s P.E. teacher. PTA volunteers supervise the games, and the PTA provides ribbons for the student participants. Primary and Secondary Field Days are held in the spring.
Game Day: This is a new PTA event that will focus on competition, sportsmanship and fun. Students will compete in a variety of sports, such as basketball, soccer and football using a bracket system, culminating in a “best of” for each sport.
Golf Tournament: The PTA sponsors a Golf Tournament for Copper Canyon parents and their friends. The event typically takes place in the spring, and allows parents to socialize with friends and fellow Copper Canyon parents while enjoying the outdoors and fun of golf.
Grocery Store Programs: The PTA establishes and monitors grocery store rewards accounts, in which a percentage of purchases at local grocery stores are given back to Copper Canyon. Albertson’s and Bashas are current partners.
Health and Safety: This PTA committee meets monthly with the school nurse, custodian, principal and a teacher representative to discuss safety issues concerning our children and school.
Historian: PTA creates an annual scrapbook that is displayed for all parents and visitors to see in the Copper Canyon lobby. The PTA coordinates parent volunteers from each classroom to submit a layout for the Copper Canyon scrapbook and compiles all pages when they are done.
Holiday Craft Day: This program allows students to choose and make crafts as gifts for loved ones for the holiday season. Before Holiday Craft Day, students select high-quality and creative crafts to make for someone special. On Holiday Craft Day, students use their creativity to make their gifts. PTA volunteers help students make crafts, rotate through craft stations, and gift-wrap completed crafts.
KISS – Fall Fundraiser: The PTA conducts its main fundraiser in September. The KISS – Keep It Simple Students – fundraiser collects donations, without the kids selling stuff, which will cover the cost of PTA events and programs needed throughout the school year.
Library Volunteers: PTA library volunteers are integral to keeping our library open throughout the day. Volunteers re-shelf books and work the circulation desk during lunch hours, as well as before and after school. They also help to maintain a positive, quiet working environment monitoring students who are in the library working on AR. Without library volunteers, students would not have to opportunity to visit the library during times other than their classroom visits.
Monday Mail: This program processes and organizes the flyers that go home to families every Monday. This is a primary communication tool used by Copper Canyon to keep families informed, and it helps to eliminate additional loose paperwork for families throughout the week.
Movie Night: PTA organizes and manages a fun night at the movies on the big field at Copper Canyon. Families can bring blankets and chairs to enjoy a movie under the stars together. Families often bring dinner and make a night of it.
Newsletter: The PTA sends a bi-weekly electronic newsletter to keep you informed on upcoming PTA programs and events. Not only does the newsletter provide useful information, you can also click on links for forms, pertinent contact information, as well as various sign-ups. There are also links for other helpful websites.
Parent Education: Parent Education presents workshops or programs for our parents regarding current issues and events. Previous topics are as varied as how to take the hassle out of homework, the best way to save for college and how to speak to your children about peer pressure.
Publishing Lab: In this PTA program, students write, illustrate, and publish their own books. Teachers collect students’ writing throughout the year to be included in a one-of-a-kind anthology of an individual student’s work. PTA volunteers type, proof and bind the books. At the end of the year, each Copper Canyon student receives a beautifully bound hardcover anthology of his/her writing throughout the school year. These books not only show the growth each student makes creatively and academically in a year, but they also make wonderful keepsakes for the family.
Reader of the Month: The PTA recognizes and rewards Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students from each class on a monthly basis for reading achievement. PTA presents students with books, ribbons and certificates to celebrate their achievement.
Reflections: This is an annual National PTA sponsored Fine Arts contest for writing, drawing, music, choreography and photography. Through this contest the PTA encourages creative thinking and exploring a theme through artistic expression. Entries are collected and judged at the school level, then displayed throughout the school. PTA holds an awards ceremony for all participants, and finalists are submitted for state and possibly National PTA levels.
School Directory: PTA assembles and distributes an annual school directory that is available to Copper Canyon families. The directory is complimentary with a PTA membership, and is distributed to families in September.
School Pictures: PTA schedules and organizes school picture days in the fall and spring. PTA volunteers manage the flow of students throughout the day to alleviate additional work on the teachers.
Science Week: PTA provides activities and speakers for students throughout Science Week. Classrooms can rotate through different presentations on a variety of scientific subjects such as biology, medicine, physics, astronomy, and chemistry. The material is engaging for students and grade appropriate.
Summer Reading Program: PTA encourages our children to read all summer long by holding the annual Summer Reading Incentive Program. Students follow a reading incentive plan and keep track of their reading progress. The PTA volunteers open a room at Copper Canyon twice a week in the summer so students can show their progress and receive prizes for their reading achievement.
Teacher Appreciation: The PTA reminds teachers and staff of their importance and value by creating monthly gifts and perks for them and planning dinner for all teachers during conference weeks. PTA Teacher Appreciation also provides information and instructions to all parents regarding the planned and suggested events during teacher appreciation week.
T-Shirts/Spirit: This program encourages Copper Canyon school spirit with the sale of school items and apparel. Throughout the year families can purchase spirit items.
United Parent Council (UPC): Volunteers represent our school to the United Parents Council for the PV Unified School District. This involvement allows PTA to stay current on issues in the District that affect our school and students.
Variety Show: Students create their own acts while trying out for the PTA Variety Show. The students rehearse in preparation for the big performance on the Copper Canyon stage in front of their classmates and their families at both day and evening performances.
Website: In order to provide up-to-date information on PTA programs and events, the PTA has totally revamped the Copper Canyon PTA website (www.coppercanyonpta.com). Through the website parents and teachers can find out the latest school information, see what’s happening on the PTA calendar of events, download forms, find links for other useful websites, learn about PTA programs, find contact information for their State Legislators, obtain past PTA newsletters, see pictures and videos from school events, and much more.
Welcome Committee: The PTA Welcome Committee is often the first impression of PTA for families new to Copper Canyon. The committee hosts a Welcome Coffee for Kindergarten parents, creates welcome packets for new families, and reaches out to families that are new throughout the school year to get them acclimated and involved at Copper Canyon.
Year-End Party: To celebrate the end of a successful year, PTA throws a party for all Copper Canyon students and their families. Typically on a weekend day, this party provides a fun way for families to get together. Previous parties have taken place on the green at Copper Canyon or poolside at a local resort.
Yearbook: For that special keepsake of a great year at Copper Canyon, the PTA publishes an annual school yearbook.
Young Authors: This PTA program invites a children’s literature author to Copper Canyon to speak and/or conduct workshops with the students. The PTA partners with teachers to schedule time for students to work with the author and develop their own creative writings.
